About Us

What We Do

Membership in the Co-operative is open to all pensioners of any age, and all who choose to call themselves senior citizens regardless of age and all others who would like to associate themselves with the co-operative and help them in their purpose: Aging well at home. 50+ is only a slogan.

We are incorporated as non-profit community service co-operative in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL; co-operative # 95645). In the incorporation process, we were guided and supported by the Newfoundland-Labrador Foundation of Co-operatives who selected us as one of five pilot incubator programs. Following this development, our website, the pilot services offered by our development team, and following the incorporation your options as members, volunteers, donors, etc. will be expanded gradually.

Services

Currently, our co-operative already offers free services to the public:

Koffee Klatsch

DVD Chair Yoga & Arthritis Exercises

We are inspired by and will be based on the co-operative values and principles, on the village movement, and a framework of gender equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging, and anti-racism.

As co-operative , we are an “autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic,

social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically-controlled enterprise. Co-operatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity. In the tradition of their founders, co-operative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others”.

The seven cooperative principles – voluntary and open membership; democratic member control; member economic participation; autonomy and independence; education, training, and information; cooperation among co-operatives; and concern for community – are guidelines by which cooperatives put their values into practice.

Like a village, our co-operative consists of “neighbours caring for neighbours! Villages are community-based, non-profit, grassroots organizations formed through a cadre of caring neighbours who want to change the paradigm of aging”

“Local Villages connect members to a wide array of practical support services and social connections that enable older adults to enjoy a rich, independent and healthy quality of life when they choose to age in their homes and communities. Villages build a sense of community and offer resources, services, programs and activities, including social and educational programs, health and wellness activities and volunteer assistance with transportation, light home maintenance, and technology coaching. The Village Movement originated in Boston with Beacon Hill Village, leading the way for a more economically efficient model for aging”.
